How long does it take for CBD to work?

Cannabidiol is growing ever more popular as a treatment for a multitude of ailments. The oil has been shown to help reduce pain and inflammation, has antipsychotic effects, combats anxiety, aids in the fight against cancer, relieves nausea and may even improve cardiovascular health. While the legality of medicinal marijuana is still under debate in many countries, the uses are undeniable.

Marijuana in medicine is an age-old practice, but how long does it take for a patient to benefit from this ancient medication. The answer to this is a rather complex one, as CBD does not behave in a similar way to modern medicine.

The first factor that needs to be considered, is the method of ingestion. There are various ways in which a person can consume CBD, with each method having its own efficacy rate.

  • Inhaling – This method has the quickest onset time, and is suggested if the consumer is seeking rapid relief from their ailment. CBD, in this case, can be inhaled with the use of a vaporizer and the effects will be felt within a few minutes.
  • Sublingually – Allowing CBD to be absorbed under the tongue, is the second fastest option available. Like inhalation, this method involves only a few minutes delay between consumption and relief.
  • Topically – A topical application of CBD involves rubbing the product onto the skin. In this way, absorption is slower but it is at a constant rate. A method such as this is preferred among users who wish for the effects of CBD to be longer lasting. There is, however, a longer waiting time here.
  • Eating – The last method involves actual consumption of CBD. This method involves a rather long waiting time. Once the CBD is consumed, the effects may only be felt once the hour mark has been reached. There are also other factors that come into play here.

Firstly, the amount of time between consumption and the last meal that took place. If one wishes to reduce the waiting time, CBD should be consumed on an empty stomach. Consumption of CBD with food or beverages is a preferred method for those that are striving to avoid nausea and dysphoria.

It is important here to note that, the effective times mentioned for the listed methods are only general guidelines. The amount of time it takes to feel the effects of CBD does not only vary with each method. It is also dependent on the dosage taken and, is patient specific.

Each person has a different tolerance for CBD. While a high dose may not provide relief for some, it could be too much for others. The only sure way to figure out the correct dose is through experimentation. The key factor to bear in mind here is how the individual is feeling. It is suggested, to begin with, a dose of 2-3 mgs. This low dose is then increased incrementally until symptoms disappear. Once the symptoms are gone, the user has reached their optimal dose. It is not recommended to exceed this dosage. It is unlikely that symptoms get worse but if they do, decrease the dose.

It is frequently asked whether a person can overdose on CBD. The answer here is slightly complex. CBD and THC are the most common cannabinoids found in marijuana. Each has their own uses in medicine. THC is used in cases where antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory or appetite simulation is desired. While CBD is used to treat inflammation, anxiety and other listed conditions.

The main difference between these two chemicals is the psychoactive effects. THC is a psychoactive component in marijuana, while CBD is- at times- used as an antipsychotic. This is one of the main reasons for the growing popularity of CBD over THC. As CBD is not psychoactive, it is less likely for a person to overdose on it. There is also no ‘high’ associated with CBD use. It may produce a relaxing effect on the user, but this should not be mistaken for being high.

The benefits of CBD are abundantly clear, but caution still ought to be taken. Studies on the long-term effects of CBD are anecdotal at best. Most of the studies that have been performed on CBD have, as yet, only been performed on animals. It is therefore prudent for each person to pay attention to their own body. One should not abuse CBD, but rather utilize it only to treat symptoms of the present condition.  If the longevity of the effects is a concern, time to prepare and consume the product should be considered. It is also prudent to only consume CBD that is of a superior quality.

Only reputable CBD vendors should be used. This is because they require their products to pass lab tests performed by a third party. By enforcing these rules, CBD vendors can provide their customers with a product that is not diluted by other harmful substances. Vendors such as these, are obviously only available in States where the use of CBD for medicinal purposes has been legalized. The production of this product is a lengthy and expensive process. With this being said, cheap and attractive products should be avoided as the validity of their content is questionable.

In conclusion, CBD has been shown to be effective in the treatment of pain, inflammation, psychosis, anxiety, insomnia and many others. It is not very common for strains of marijuana to have high levels of CBD, but with the advancing times, more money and time is being poured into the research of these strains. Although an overdose is highly unlikely on CBD, users should not abandon caution. Doses should be carefully monitored, and a general GP should be consulted or alerted before proceeding with the treatment.

Attention must also always be paid to the prevailing laws in the user’s resident state. While medicinal marijuana is being used more frequently it has not been unilaterally legalized. Lastly, in order to avoid undesirable outcomes, only products of the highest quality should be administered.
